The History of Faith Tabernacle Church of Spartanburg

Our faith journey has progressed over the past 11 years into one of “great faith” that began on Saturday, September 20, 2014, when circumstances beyond our comprehension or our control forced us on a journey that we did not see in our future as a church family. On Sunday, September 21, 2014, Pastor Brandon T. Whitehurst, some of his deacons and several of his members were removed from their place of worship. The initial shock took several days to overcome, but on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, Pastor Whitehurst called a meeting at the First Family Mortuary to share a vision, and that vision from God was instructing him to step out on faith and plant a church. The name of the ministry would be Faith Tabernacle Inc. of Spartanburg. There were 36 members present at this meeting and all agreed to begin services on Sunday , September 28, 2014, with Life Institute classes (formerly Sunday School) beginning at 9:45 am and morning worship at 11:00 am. Pastor Lawrence Meadows had agreed to let us worship in the chapel of First Family as long as needed. Just one week after we had been overwhelmed by unforeseen circumstances, we were fellowshipping together in total and joyous unity as one body in Christ as the newly established Faith Tabernacle Church of Spartanburg. We give glory and honor to our God for the marvelous things that He had done. This was a “Fresh Start” for us. God was turning our ashes into beauty as he had promised in His word. (Isaiah 61:3) “and provide for those who grieve in Zion - to bestow on them ta crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be
called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor.”

Through strong leadership, much continuous prayer, dynamic and powerful preaching and teaching the word of God, our Bishop, Brandon T. Whitehurst, Sr. has led the Faith Tabernacle Church family to walk by faith and not by sight. Ten years later, our God has faithfully brought us a long way because we are still reaping a harvest of blessings. We started with 36 members and now we have nearly 200 members at this present time. We have fed the hungry, clothed the needy, evangelized the lost, blessed families at Christmas time, and partnered with local community officials and organizational to improve our local surroundings. We have enjoyed a long and satisfying partnership with the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen over these 11 years.

1 Corinthians 2:9 is a scripture that has become our cornerstone: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love him.” God has blessed our church in ways that far exceed what we could have asked for or ever imagined. Our mission remains the same: To live by faith, to be known by love, reflecting the difference Christ makes in the world.

Our Vision Statement: We are a ministry built on the word of God, expanding the kingdom of God by carrying out His command to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). We will build a city on earth where God and his people can meet and commune as He sees fit. If people need it, then this city will have it, and have it in all proportions. We will be that visionary community of believers where all people will be empowered and no lack will exist among them (Acts 4:32-37)

We give praise and thanksgiving to our God for all His mighty works.
